According to Yasmine Blackman, tattoos and piercings is not mutilation:
"Would the literally millions of people all over the world, from different countries, classes, genders, cultures and sub cultures have them selves pierced or tattooed if they thought it was mutilation? The answer, put simply, is a resounding NO."Link for more details^:http://www.helium.com/items/1020213-tattoos-and-body-piercing-art-or-mutilation
I agree with Yasmine! Many people have their eyebrow, belly button, ears periced and many people disapprove and judge people because of them. IF YOU DON'T LIKE PERICINGS OR TATOOS DON'T LOOOK!
Plain and simple its someone elses body not yours!
Also, according to Yasmine Blackman:
"Tattoos and piercings can represent so many things, they can represent milestones-consciously or sub consciously and represent where people are at a certain time in their lives. They can become tributes, or memories. They can be anything the modified wants them to be."
Many people have tattoos to represent their life such as a family members name or a picture such a butterfly that might symbolize something special to the person getting it. According to some people TATTOOS ARE A FORM OF ART! People express themselves from piercings to tattoos and feel good about getting them.
According to a Peter from Peicing Forum:
"I myself have several tattoos, and too many piercings to count. My family says that both are mutilation & that the body should remain “unmarked” . I say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder…"Many people get judged and even bullied because of the excess piercings and tattoos that they have on their body. Who are people to judge?! (this also ties in with bullying-my previous blog)
HOWEVER
According to Lawrence Rubin and Michael Brody :
"The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry released a statement in 1999 in which they listed tattooing and 'excessive piercing' along with picking, burning, head-banging and cutting as possible forms of self-injury."Link to the quote above : http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/popular-culture-meets-psychology/200907/tattoos-and-body-piercing-adolescent-self-expression-or
Tattoos and Piercings to many people are a sign of art..art is humanities =)
I say who cares what people say?! In my opinion i do not think Piercing ans tattoos is self mutilation--I know what i am doing to my body--why do you care?!
If people wan to to get inked up and get pierced i say do it! I say express yourself, its a form of art, it's a part of YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
People feel more confident and good in their skin if they do these actions-do it!
What you do to your own body is your business. What I don't like, however, is in-your-face piercings on exposed parts of the body.
ReplyDeleteImagine going to a job interview ten years from now with an earring in your tongue or nose. There's a reason why they're called "earrings," not "tongue-rings" or "nose-rings."
I think that this piercings craze is yet another way in which today's society teaches people to idolize the body - instead of focuing on things that should matter, like education, character, and actions.
Is there any reason why someone would want to pierce his/her belly button, nose, or tongue? It seems ridiculous and unnecessary to me.
But - then again - ours is a society obsessed with physical appearance and the objectification of the human body (leaving, of course, no room for the soul). It's really a shame that people would desecrate their bodies in this fatuous and entirely useless, unnecessary, and embarrassing way. If you don't want to be embarrassed by others, don't embarrass yourself.
You also need to consider that there are certain medical implications to piercing your body in places that weren't meant to be pierced, either for the purpose of inserting rings or drawing tattoos: you can get an infection if you don't take care of it properly!
Remember that tattoos are not easily removable(well, you can get laser removal, but not everything is as easy as you think it is). What if you decide - ten or twenty years hence - that you don't want a tattoo? What are you going to do about it?
You write: "Tattoos and Piercings to many people are a sign of art..art is humanities."
Uh, no - idiotic, in-your-face tattoos and piercings are, in many instances, a perversion of art. I would understand if someone had made a painting that was hanging up in a museum and admired by hundreds of people every day. I would understand if someone wrote a book that was read by hundreds of people. But to paint on your own body...? Ehhh!
You need to really consider and examine WHY you want to do this. Is it to fit in? Is it because you feel bad about your body?
In many cases, there is a larger, deeper issue that needs to be examined - and the urge to desecrate one's body is indicative of psychological problems such as feelings of inferiority.
No offense to anypne who may have done this already, but I absolutely disapprove of this practice.
Mike I have my nose pierced n belly pierced and I do not do it for society i do it for me that's one
ReplyDeleteand it's not "idiotic"..why because it's not what YOU LIKE?...I think people who judge and are IGNORANT is idiotic- but that's just my opinion...it's art to some people
again -like I said people judge and that's exactly what you are doing......no one cares who disapproves because like I said in my blog it's my body why do you care?! This is not a waste of time ... you seem to have about everything...but I am going to just say what I know so I am not going to continue a conversation with an arrogant person...no offense =)
sorry that was me.. I didn't realize I was on Bianca's blog ^^^^^^^^
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this blog! It never really crossed my mind that piercings and tattoos are related to humanities but they truly are one in the same. I agree with you when you say that piercings and tattoos are a way of expressing yourself cause I beleive it truly is. As you already know I have my tongue pierced and ear and cartilidge and plan on getting more along with a tattoo, or tattoos. I love piercings and tattoos not to fit into society but because certain piercings can define a person, and I beleive certain ones can define me.
ReplyDeleteTo what mike is saying... I completely disagree with out about how piercings are ridiculous and pointless and idiotic and what not.
ReplyDeleteI love piercings have 8 and I did it for my own reasons, I think its cool, and says something about my character. And same for tattoos, I think they are awesome if they are significant to you. You don't have to understand why a person has gotten a certain tattoo. Its obviously for their own personal reason, and is symbolic to them. I will be definitely getting a tattoo.
But back to the blog, Fabia I think this blog is awesome and tattoos and piercings are a way of art I would say.
